Coding Classes for Kids in Tokyo, in English — Live 1-on-1

Finding coding classes for kids in Tokyo in English is harder than it sounds, because many programming schools in Japan teach in Japanese. We offer English coding classes for kids in Japan as live 1-on-1 lessons over Zoom, with the same mentor every week.

The lessons suit international-school students, bilingual children in Japanese schools who want to keep their English active, and families who moved to Japan for work. Everything is online, so it works the same in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, Nagoya or Fukuoka.

Your child shares their screen and writes the code; the mentor guides, asks questions and helps them debug. Each lesson lasts 60 minutes. Tracks for ages 8–17:

• Roblox Studio and Luau — building and scripting games.
• Python — problem-solving, games and small apps.
• Web development — HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Lessons can also be taught in Ukrainian or Russian.

Japan made programming part of compulsory education in stages: elementary schools from April 2020, junior high schools from 2021, and the high-school subject Information I, which includes programming, from 2022. Information I has also been part of the university entrance Common Test since 2025, so programming now matters well beyond a club activity.

At elementary level, school programming is often visual and short. One-on-one lessons let a child go further: typing real code in Luau or Python, reading error messages and building one project over several weeks. For children in Japanese schools, learning in English adds a second benefit — technical English, the language of most programming documentation.

International schools in Japan usually follow British, American or IB programmes, where computer science also moves to text-based languages around the start of secondary school. Our lessons don't replace any curriculum; they give your child more hands-on practice and a mentor to ask.

Plenty of children in Japan already play Roblox with friends. In Roblox classes they switch sides: they open Roblox Studio, build a map, and write Luau scripts that make it work — a door that slides open, a coin that adds to a score, a platform that moves, a round timer. Luau is a real text-based language, so the habits carry over to Python and beyond.

Roblox Studio is free but needs a Windows PC or a Mac. It won't run on an iPad, and a mouse makes building much easier.

Lessons are taught from Toronto, 13 hours behind Japan for most of the year. The mentor's morning teaching hours fall in the Japanese evening:

• Roughly March to early November: weekday slots around 20:00–22:00 JST.
• Roughly November to March: about 21:00–23:00 JST, because Canada moves its clocks back and Japan doesn't change time.
• Weekends: Saturday and Sunday evening slots in Japan are also possible.

To be honest about it: for younger children, winter evening slots can be late. For them, the earliest weekday slot or a weekend evening usually works better. We don't publish a fixed timetable; after the free lesson we agree one regular time and keep it. Summer vacation, from late July through August, is a popular time to start because evenings are free of homework.

A 60-minute 1-on-1 lesson costs CA$70, roughly ¥7,800 at current exchange rates. Lessons come in blocks of four for CA$280, about ¥31,000. For comparison, large US-based schools charge around US$60–75 for a 50–60 minute private lesson.

You pay by PayPal invoice in Canadian dollars, and PayPal or your card issuer converts to yen. Some Japanese cards add an overseas-transaction fee, so it's worth checking. If your plans change, unused lessons are refundable within 14 days.
